The City of Silence

Overview

The city of silence

The city of silence

The City of Silence is the great necropolis where the sanctified dead of Quintra and Denday were laid to rest. Unlike ordinary burial grounds, its tombs hold mummified priests and paladins, preserved by sacred rites that protect them from corruption and necromancy. It is said no voice dares rise above a whisper within its walls, for to disturb the silence is to wake its guardians.

Location & Structure

The necropolis lies in a valley set apart from the living, its gates carved with the sigils of both Quintra and Denday. Within, two precincts divide the faithful:

  • Quintra’s Quarter: Sunlit courts, gilded facades, and statues of radiant guardians. The tombs are bright and austere, reflecting the goddess’s devotion to light and order.
  • Denday’s Quarter: Shadowed halls, etched with silver runes that glow faintly in moonlight. The tombs here are solemn, draped in quiet reverence and dreamlike calm.

Between them runs the Silent Causeway, a wide processional path where both orders once walked together in rare unity to entomb their dead.

Customs & Rites

Mummification here is a sacred act, reserved only for priests, paladins, and champions of the faiths. Each body was washed in oils, wrapped in linens marked with sigils of sun or moon, and sealed with protective wards. These rites ensured that no necromancer could ever bind them.

It is said that when the final seal was set, the silence of the necropolis deepened — a divine hush, marking the soul’s departure through the Veil.

Legends & Awakenings

The mummies of the City of Silence cannot be raised by mortal necromancy. Yet stories persist of rare awakenings:

  • Wards disturbed: When thieves or the ignorant broke seals, guardians stirred to drive them away.
  • Ghor’s scars: In times when corruption seeped into the land, some awoke not in malice, but to stand vigil once more.
  • Divine omen: Some sects believe an awakened mummy heralds Quintra’s judgment or Denday’s warning.

Cultural Notes

To this day, secret sects linger, venerating the mummies as saints and guardians. Pilgrims leave offerings of light and dream-herbs at the gates, though few dare enter. Scholars debate whether the silence of the necropolis is simply reverence — or an enchantment woven into its very stones.
