Captain Maelin Marrow

Overview

Maelin Marrow is the captain of the Kestrel, a merchant vessel carrying goods between the Xaverion islands. A seasoned seafarer with little patience for wasted time, she runs her ship and crew with practical efficiency and expects agreements to be honoured.

Appearance & Manner

Maelin is a broad-shouldered woman with a weather-lined face and dark hair usually bound tightly against the wind. She carries herself with the confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed aboard her own ship and tends towards short, direct instructions rather than lengthy explanations.

She is mostly just called Captain by her crew, but sometimes they will call her Captain MM. Among other Seafarers she is also more commonly known as Captain MM.

Personality

• Practical: MM concerns herself with what needs to be done rather than ceremony.
• Efficient: she expects her crew to work quickly, particularly when cargo and port fees are involved.
• Fair: although not especially warm, she honours agreements and expects others to do the same.
• Authoritative: aboard the Kestrel, there is little uncertainty about who is in command.

Role in the Story

MM captains the Kestrel during its voyage from Meriquy to Calithor in Tanea. She allows Suraia, Thorn and Vasha to travel aboard her vessel in exchange for helping during the crossing and parts with them in Calithor once both sides have fulfilled their agreement.
